Camagüey, Nov 9.- Maraguán Ensemble  performed this weekend at the Teatro Principal, of this province, presenting its “Suite Cubana”, a choreography that the group will take to Havana on November 11th, in the framework of  the World Congress of the International Council of Organizations for Folklore Festivals and Folk Art (CIOFF), to be held for the first time in Cuba.

This piece of art is a synthesis of “Cubanísmo”, “Por los campos de mi Cuba”, “Homenaje” and “Caribe soy”, which are also part of its repertoire.

Suite Cubana brings about dances and songs with strong components of our cultural roots, inherited from Spain and Africa, Haiti and Jamaica.

Founded in 1981, and attached to the University of Camagüey,  Maraguán is made up by college students and has toured several cities around the world to participate in festivals sponsored by CIOFF.  This International Council was founded in France in 1970.

Since the establishment of the International Folklore and Wine Festival in Dijon,  considered worldwide the main contest of folkloric dance and music contest, Maraguán is the only one ensemble that has won medals (one gold, one silver) in two occasions.

Fernando Medrano, director and founder of this group in which 1 200 amateur artists have been engaged, has assured many times that the awards gained “are not the result of one individual, but the fruit of a disciplinary work, based on love for our own folklore”. (Taken from Cubadebate)
