Havana, Nov20.- The President of the Cuban Parliament Ricardo Alarcon called on Thursday in the city of Holguin for all solidarity activists to intensify their work in favour of the release of the five Cuban political prisoners incarcerated in the US for fighting terrorism.
Alarcon told the participants to the International Conference on American Studies on the need to multiply the battle for the release of Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez.
He stressed that last October 13th, during the re-sentencing of Antonio Guerrero, the judge for Florida´s South District recognized the importance of the international solidarity movement in favour of the five.
The re-sentencing ended in 21 years and 10 months in prison, sentence superior to what was agreed on by the Defense and Prosecution and the government claimed that the only argument in favour of the accused was the international pressure of solidarity movements, said Alarcon. Aspects of the unjust legal process in addition to the authority of the US President in ordering the release of the Five were issues that was also discussed in the master conference held at the Center on American Studies.
The Cuban Parliament also referred to the role of the 12 Amicus Curiae presented before the US Supreme Court, characterized as an unprecedented event in the US legal system due to the amount of amicus.
Among them were 10 Nobel Peace Prize laureates, hundreds of legislators from around the world and a large number of associations like the International Human Rights Federation and the American Jurists Association.
Next December 8th the re-sentencing of Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino will be held in Miami, while in the case of Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez the defense will present a Habeas Corpus in June 2010, the last legal tool that the defense have to defend the injustice of these anti terrorist fighters.
